Check engine light still on after fixing the issue, is that normal?

Had a code for a bad sensor, replaced the part, but the check engine light is still on. Did I do something wrong or is this expected?

This is actually pretty normal and not a sign you did anything wrong. Replacing the part fixes the underlying problem, but the fault code itself is usually stored separately and needs to be cleared, either with a code reader/scan tool, or sometimes it'll clear itself automatically after several successful drive cycles where the issue doesn't reoccur. If you have access to a scan tool, clearing the code manually is the faster route.

Ah okay that makes sense. I don't have a scan tool, how many drive cycles are we talking about usually?

It varies by manufacturer and which code it was, but a common rule of thumb is it can take anywhere from a handful of trips up to a few days of normal driving for the system to confirm the fix and turn the light off on its own. If it's still on after a week of regular driving, that's usually when it's worth getting it scanned to confirm whether the original issue is actually resolved or if something else triggered a new code.

Went away on its own after about 4 days of driving. Appreciate the explanation, was worried I messed something up.

Did this solve your problem?
